The Best Kitesurf Travel Bags: Buyer's Guide
Buying a kitesurfing or surfboard board bag
Travelling with your kitesurf gear, whether on a day trip in the van or on a flight to your favourite holiday location, you will want to protect your gear with the protection of a kitesurf board bag. We sell twin-tip day bags and fully padded travel coffins that can hold many kites and boards.
Kite Gear
We stock both surfboard and twin-tip shape padded kiteboard board bags. We also have replacement kite stuff sacks to keep the weight down for trips abroad. A good travel bag is a compromise between lightweight construction and protective padding, that may feature wheels. A top-loader bag will be easier to pack than one you have to load from an end.
Quick Tips for Choosing a Kitesurfing Bag
Select a bag that is the appropriate size for your equipment. If travelling with more than one kite, select a bigger bag or multiple bags to ensure all the gear fits comfortably. You can save weight by not having wheels. Usually, wheels and the extra padding will save you two kgs. ( a kite bar weighs three-ish kgs) . To get the perfect travel buddy most comfortably with multiple boards and three kites, you will need a board bag with xl wheels, but you might well be pushing past many airlines with twenty-three kgs. Of course, if you are business or first class, the 32 kg limit kicks in, and you will be fine. I believe if you are travelling first class, you can take as much gear as you would like. ( best check with your airline or at the airports)
Wheels vs No Wheels
Save the weight with a lightweight board bag, without extra protective padding, but then worry some courier will drop your board bag out of a plane. The price of a travel board bag is from about £60 to £200 depending on how reinforced and durable the board bag is, the space and how light it is.
Having travelled a lot, I have found taking 2-3 kites, a board, pump, bar, and lines is often close to 23kgs, including kitesurf board bag featuring heavy-duty wheels. If you want space to take several surfboards, it might be better to pay for an extra bag; you can also take clothes.
Will I get it cheaper using a golf bag?
Be careful if, at the airport, they check your golf bag and you do not have golf clubs; they get agitated. A golf bag was a cheaper way to get your sports luggage on a BA flight, but this has changed now, and most sports bags is all the same and price.
A good quality bag suitable for your kite's with good protection features, like extra handles, is money well spent. Manufacturers like Ion and mystic gearbox square in four different sizes make a good board bag for your kitesurfing needs. Prolimit makes the lightweight board bag with no extra protection.
